KAMPUNG LAB MNL
November 9, 2014
2135 Chino Roces Warehouse, Chino Roces St., Makati, Philippines

On November 7–9, 2014, SABAW MEDIA ART KITCHEN presented WSK 2014: FESTIVAL OF THE RECENTLY POSSIBLE in various spaces in the Philippine metro.

WSK (a modern disemvoweled form of wasak, which means “shattered” in Filipino) is the first and the only annual international art festival dedicated to the digital and electronic arts in the Philippines.

Now on its fifth edition, the event is a celebration of digital culture and invention, that brings together a global community of artists and audiences from the ASEAN region and beyond.

The festival proper was preceded by Open Studio Workshops held at Manila-based contemporary art space 1335Mabini, led by invited WSK resident artists, starting October 30.

These sessions culminated in the creation of new collaborative projects in the form of audiovisual concerts (November 7-9) and an interactive 3D mapping exhibition (November 9), which were showcased in the festival.

The festival closed with a special interactive audiovisual installation by media artists GENE KOGAN [US] and RICKY JANITRA [ID], in collaboration with local VJ visual label MVLTIVERSE and video artist EDSEL ABESAMES.

The installation primarily made use of lights and projections, and involved contemporary technology such as Kinect, 3D mapping, Arduino and electronics, and creative code.

The work was the result of the 5-day open studio wokshop involving artists from the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, USA, and Japan.
The work was mounted inside the warehouse parking lot, where the final concert also took place simultaneously.

Performers included artists from the roster of Manila-based indie label Number Line Records, such as SIMILAR OBJECTS, SLOW HELLO, AND BIG HAT GANG, as well as WSK regulars JOEE & I with GENTLE UNIVERSE, JONATHAN EFFEMEY & ERICK CALILAN, and BENT LYNCHPIN.

The diverse range of their productions and the styles they touched on made this year's performers among the most original ear-gripping voices in the current electronic music scene.

To end the night, an open jam ensued, wherein the audience, artists, and organizers shared the stage, officially capping off both the evening and the festival still true to the spirit of community and collaboration.
