WSK 2014 [FESTIVAL OPENING: BLACK MARKET]
November 7, 2014
Black Market, Warehouse 5, La Fuerza Compound, Sabio St. cor Pasong Tamo, Makati

On November 7–9, 2014, SABAW MEDIA ART KITCHEN presented WSK 2014: FESTIVAL OF THE RECENTLY POSSIBLE in various spaces in the Philippine metro.

WSK (a modern disemvoweled form of wasak, which means “shattered” in Filipino) is the first and the only annual international art festival dedicated to the digital and electronic arts in the Philippines.

Now on its fifth edition, the event is a celebration of digital culture and invention, that brings together a global community of artists and audiences from the ASEAN region and beyond.

The festival proper was preceded by Open Studio Workshops held at Manila-based contemporary art space 1335Mabini, led by invited WSK resident artists, starting October 30.

These sessions culminated in the creation of new collaborative projects in the form of audiovisual concerts (November 7-9) and an interactive 3D mapping exhibition (November 9), which were showcased in the festival.

WSK 2014 was headlined by two of Japan's most groundbreaking electronic musicians to have crossed over in recent years: YOSI HORIKAWA and DAISUKE TANABE at Black Market, an underground warehouse club in Pasong Tamo, Makati City.

Together, they produced music and sound design that was equal times experimental and genre-defying, yet undeniably approachable.

They were followed by influential indie-electro duo STYLISH NONSENSE from Thailand, who played a one-of-a-kind minimal set using electronic drumpads and keyboard synth.

Supporting acts included our very own homegrown artists, such as CHILDREN OF CATHODE RAY, one of the seminal media art collectives in the 80s, in their first reunion performance since 2001, alongside beatsmith CALIPH8 and local electronica pioneer MALEK LOPEZ. They were also joined by BLACK MARKET'S RESIDENT DJS.

All musical performances were accompanied by live visuals and projections from some of the best media artists working today in the USA, Manila, and Southeast Asia: GENE KOGAN, a New York-based media artist and programmer; media artist RICKY JANITRA and art tech-hacker community LIFEPATCH from Indonesia; together with some of the top live VJs, motion graphic artists, and visual labels in Manila, such as UNDE, MVLTIVERSE, and EDSEL ABESAMES.

WSK 2014: Festival of the Recently Possible is organized by SABAW Media Art Kitchen, through the generous support of The Japan Foundation, Manila, in cooperation with 1335Mabini, Black MARKET, TIU Theater, and 2135 Chino Roces Warehouse.
