ALL WATCHED OVER BY MACHINES OF LOVING GRACE
November 8, 2014
TIU Theater, Mile Long Compound, Amorsolo St. cor Dela Rosa St., Makati, Philippines

On November 7–9, 2014, SABAW MEDIA ART KITCHEN presented WSK 2014: FESTIVAL OF THE RECENTLY POSSIBLE in various spaces in the Philippine metro.

WSK (a modern disemvoweled form of wasak, which means “shattered” in Filipino) is the first and the only annual international art festival dedicated to the digital and electronic arts in the Philippines.

Now on its fifth edition, the event is a celebration of digital culture and invention, that brings together a global community of artists and audiences from the ASEAN region and beyond.

The festival proper was preceded by Open Studio Workshops held at Manila-based contemporary art space 1335Mabini, led by invited WSK resident artists, starting October 30.

These sessions culminated in the creation of new collaborative projects in the form of audiovisual concerts (November 7-9) and an interactive 3D mapping exhibition (November 9), which were showcased in the festival.

WSK's second day was dedicated to showcasing the results of the collaboration between the audiovisual workshop conductors and participants.

The evening’s highlight was the screening of a short documentary - "CALINAWAN" - by local film collective TITO & TITA, featuring behind-the-scenes footage of the field recording sessions done by DAISUKE TANABE and YOSI HORIKAWA while on an out-of-town trip in Tanay, Rizal, during their festival residency. This was followed by a live ambient set by the said Japanese artists, wherein they presented new compositions produced using sounds and samples culled from the Rizal visit.

Other performers for the second night included Canadian electronic musician SZKIEVE, Indonesian media artist RICKY BABAY JANITRA, and media artist EUGENE KOGAN. The evening ended with a big bang, thanks to Bangkok-based electronic music duo STYLISH NONSENSE, who this time around used live drumming, electric bass, synthesizer, and quirky performance art in their set, which delighted the audience.

Visualizations were supplied by the AUDIO-VIDEO WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS; EDSEL ABESAMES & EUGENE KOGAN (who also did an artist talk at the beginning of the concert) making the evening a completely immersive audiovisual experience.

The first collaboration between Yosi Horikawa and Daisuke Tanabe.
In 2014, WSK invited both artists to Manila to come up with a new track. The collaboration was shot and edited by exp. film collective, Tito & Tita.

All the field recordings were done in Tanay, Quezon City, and Calinawan, and music was composed in Manila city, Metro Manila.

Supported by Japan Foundation Manila, and 1335 Mabini.
